What is Tachycardia?

Tachycardia is characterized by a rapid heart rate of often sudden onset, which can be an indicator of certain congenital heart defects. Other signs of heart problems include feeding difficulties, poor growth rate, and recurrent respiratory infections.

Heart palpitations that originate in the atria are called supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia when they originate in the ventricles. The most common supraventricular tachycardias are atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia.
